Did you spot a Detour Effect pin out in the wild? Curious what it’s all about?

We’re reinventing Flat Stanley for the nomad generation. Adventurers of all different travel styles are taking their pins into the backcountry, on road trips, or on local micro-adventures to highlight that life isn’t always about The Plan – it’s often equally as beautiful because of the unexpected detours. Some folks are using the pin as inspiration to visit places they’ve never been before, or to get out and about when they otherwise might have Netflix and chilled, and then documenting what they find. Some are using the pin to show us their favorite places that perhaps we have never seen before, so we can tag along in spirit. Where will your detours take you?

If interested in following along and seeing where people are taking their pins, you can:

  • Watch the “Your Detours,” “Pin Detours 2,” or “Pin Detours 3” Instagram highlights at @TheDetourEffect. Tag @TheDetourEffect in your Instagram stories or posts so we can find them and add you to a highlight.
  • Check out the newsletter archive to read interviews with Pin Pals about where they’ve adventured (this “Location Independence Newsletter” also featured tips and tricks for living nomadically/adventurously).
  • Click around the interactive map pinpointing the places folks have posted their pins from; click on a place to see a photo and read the description. If you’d like your photo to be added to the map but you don’t enjoy posting on social media, I’d love for you to email me your photo at info(at)thedetoureffect(dot)com.

I used to allow people to buy pins, but now I just give them out when I meet people on my travels. If you’d like to purchase a pin and have it mailed, please email me or DM me on social media.
